A05 Produce personal promotional material and investigate how work might be sold

Like the artist Estrada who i researched in this unit I feel that the internet is the best place for me to promote my work, I dont think traditional galleries would have the right target audience for my work.

Websites like Deviant art pnd youtube are where I will most easily connect with the 13 to 25 age group that form my target audience. Using my characters in short viral videos could also help raise my profile.

I have created a buisness card that could be used to help promote my work and I also created a spoof wanted poster that I used in my display, this could easily be adapted for promotional uses elsewhere.

A04 Organise and present a display/exhibition of work

At the end of my Art and design course we where asked to produce a wall display of some of our work. For my display I mounted all my work on black sugar paper and arranged my work in a series of columns that fitted in with the rule of 3rds. My display is pimed at 11 to 18 year old students at North Kesteven School.

As far as displaying my work goes i have opted for a simple design. i dont think it being simple is a bad thing though as it allows the art work to talk for itsself.

A03 Produce and present a portfolio of work

Using Photoshop I have put together a mock up of a portfolio of some of my work. I would use this portfolio if I was going to a foundation course interview.
Ive chosen work which I think shows of my skills as well as I can. The first image is a full colour design done on photoshop, I think it shows of my drawing skill and also my imagination quite well and so it is a good introduction to my work.

My second page demonstrates my character designs.

My third page demonstrates my skills with photoshop and also my sequential design work.

The next two pages focus on narrative design and some more character design.

I hope that my work shows to my audience that I have some drawing skill and the ability to design and annotate my own characters and images. Also I want my portfolio to demonstrate my proficiency with digital colouring and art.

A02 Research how professional artists/designer present, promote, manage and sell their work

I have decided to research the work of the artist Catalina Estrada.
Like young artists hopefuls, Estrada kick-started her creative adult life by studying graphic design at her local university.
Estrada started of as a graphic designer working for magazines. She soon became bored with working for other people though and decided to quit her job and go back into studying. After a short time travelling she began designing on her computer and before she knew it there was a demand for her work from the internet. Initially it was barcelona night clubs that wanted her designs. She began producing her own designs for charity cards which proved to be very popular, so popular that the prestigious Grfik magazine picked her out as an artist to watch out for. Estrada was soon in demand from big companies all round the world, like Coca-Cola all wanting her todo designs for them.
I love Estrada's style of working and have tried to use it in my unit 3 work. She found fame through showing her work on the internet, so if I want to start developing a plan for promoting my own work then it must surely start with the internet.

A01 Investigate professional, commerical and community display and presentation

For this unit I will be Analysing the different types of ways that art can be displayed and sold. By carrying out this research I will gain a greater understanding of how professional artists and crafts people make a living from their artwork.

Commercial Spaces
http://www.albanygallery.com/

here is an example of a commercial gallery
The Albany Gallery was established in 1965 and is recognised as one of Wales' most successful and long-established privately owned commercial art galleries.

Commercial art galleries are areas where the selling of art is the main buisness, this would include private art galleries, craft centres. shops and magazines. The whole point of these establishments is to sell art work. The Albany gallery hosts work by up and coming british and Welsh artists and designers. It deals in all different types of art from paintings to 3d sculptures.
The artwork that is on show is nearly always for sale and once sold the gallery takes a cut of the money before paying the artist.

Public Spaces

http://www.dunedin.art.museum/

The Dunedin is a New Zealand public museum and art gallery
Public spaces include museums and art galleries. The artwork in public spaces is normally not for sale . The Dunedin gives the public a chance to see visiting artists from overseas and also the work of local artists. I like the idea of public spaces where people are free to come and have a look. I also think that because anyone can come and see the artwork that it means that its a great way to start to get well known.

Community Spaces

Community Art could be loosely defined as a way of creating art in which professional artists collaborate more or less intensively with people who don't normally actively engage in the arts. Community arts will often involve groups of people deciding what message they want to express. More often than not Community art projects will involve alot of people whether it is making it or just seeing it every day on the way to work it is designed to involve.
My unit 17 project would lend itself well to a group based performance art peice.
